Why Does AI Recommend My Competitor Instead of Me? (And How to Check in About a Minute)

Short answer: AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google’s AI, and Claude don’t rank ten links — they name a few businesses and move on. They pick those names by reading what’s written about a business: its Google Business Profile, its reviews, and the pages that clearly describe what it does and where. If a competitor gets named instead of you, it’s usually because their information is clearer and more complete for a machine to read — not because their work is better. You can check what AI says about your business in about a minute.

The part most owners never see

Here’s a situation playing out right now that you’ll never get a notification about. Someone in your town needs a plumber. Instead of scrolling Google, they open ChatGPT and type “who’s the best plumber near me?” The assistant thinks for a second and names two or three shops. Then that person calls one of them.

If your name wasn’t in that answer, you didn’t lose the job on price or skill. You lost it before the conversation even started, and you have no idea it happened. There’s no missed call, no bounced email, no lead form. Just a customer who found someone else’s name first.

Why the other shop got named (and it’s probably not what you think)

The instinct is to assume the competitor has a slicker website or spends more on ads. Usually that’s not it. These AI assistants don’t “see” a pretty website the way a person does. They read text. So they lean on the sources that describe a business in plain, structured language:

  • Your Google Business Profile. The category, the services listed, the service area, the hours, the description, the photos. To a machine, a half-filled profile is a half-answered question.
  • Your reviews. Not just the star count — the words. A review that says “showed up same day and fixed the leak” tells the AI what you actually do. “Great service, thanks!” tells it almost nothing.
  • The pages that clearly say what you do and where. A page that plainly states “emergency AC repair in [your city]” is something a machine can quote. A homepage that just says “Quality. Trust. Family.” is not.

The shop that gets named usually just gave the machine more to work with. That’s a fixable gap, not a verdict on your work.

Indexed is not the same as recommended

You can be on Google. You can even rank on page one. And an AI assistant can still skip you — because ranking and getting recommended in an answer are two different games now. One is about where you sit in a list of links. The other is about whether a machine is confident enough in what it knows about you to say your name out loud. Plenty of good shops win the first game and lose the second without ever noticing.

How to actually check (do this today, free)

You don’t have to guess. Open ChatGPT or Google’s AI and ask it the way a customer would: “best [your trade] in [your town].” Read the answer. Is your name there? Now go look at whoever got named — pull up their Google Business Profile next to yours. You’ll usually spot the difference in about a minute: fuller description, more specific reviews, clearer service info.

That’s the whole diagnosis. The businesses AI names usually didn’t outspend you — they answered the question more clearly somewhere a machine could read it. You can do the same.

If you’d rather have it pulled and read back to you

We built a free tool that does this check for you: it asks the major assistants (ChatGPT, Google’s AI, and Claude) what they say about your business, shows you who’s getting recommended instead of you, and points at the specific gaps (profile fields, review language, pages) that may be keeping you out of the answer. Requesting it takes about a minute, and it costs nothing. If nothing else, you’ll finally see how your business looks inside AI. Most owners never have.
