How to Get Your Local Business Cited by AI Search (ChatGPT, Perplexity & AI Overviews)
A growing share of your customers no longer scroll through ten blue links. They ask an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews — a plain question: “Who’s the best HVAC company near me?” The assistant replies with a short answer and a few cited sources. The businesses named in that answer win the customer. Everyone else is invisible.
This is a real shift in how local businesses get found, and it rewards a different kind of content than classic SEO. Here’s how AI citation works and how to earn it.
Why AI engines cite some pages and ignore others
Large language models don’t “rank” pages the way Google’s ten links do. They synthesize an answer and attribute it to a handful of sources they consider trustworthy and easy to parse. In practice they favor content that is:
- Structured and machine-readable. Schema.org markup —
ItemList,LocalBusiness,AggregateRating,FAQPage— tells the model exactly what a business is, where it operates, and how it compares. - Entity-rich. Clear names, founding years, service areas, ratings, and categories give the model concrete facts to repeat.
- Editorial, not self-promotional. A “Top 5 [service] in [city]” comparison page reads as an independent recommendation. A single company’s own marketing page is easy to discount as biased.
That last point is the big one. AI engines are built to avoid sounding like an advertisement, so they lean on third-party, list-style sources — the same reason people trust Yelp or an industry roundup over a company’s homepage.
Five things that make a page AI-citable
- Answer the buying question in the title. “Best [service] in [city] (2026)” matches how people actually ask AI, and gives the model a clean entity to cite.
- Add comparison structure. A table with “Best for,” ratings, review counts, and founding dates gives the AI extractable facts to summarize.
- Use the right schema.

Addspeakablemarkup for voice and assistant surfaces. - Write specific reasons. “Family-owned since 1998, same-day emergency service, licensed master techs” beats “great service and fair prices.” Specifics get quoted; fluff gets dropped.
- Stay open to AI crawlers. Make sure your

Don’t forget the fundamentals
AI visibility doesn’t replace the basics — it compounds them. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate, keep earning genuine reviews (an automated review request system helps), and keep your name, address, and phone consistent everywhere. AI engines cross-check these signals before they trust a source.
The shortcut: be featured on a page that’s already built to be cited
Building schema-perfect, editorial ranking pages for every city you serve is a lot of work — and a single business optimizing its own site can’t easily create the third-party authority AI prefers. That’s exactly the gap our SEO ranking service fills: we build the authoritative “Top Companies” pages that feature your business and get cited by AI, across your whole service area.
